Passengers travelling on Pakistan Railways have expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of train coaches, complaining of broken windows, filthy washrooms, malfunctioning air-conditioning systems and poor maintenance despite paying high fares.
Commuters, particularly those travelling on the Allama Iqbal Express, alleged that some of the oldest and most dilapidated coaches have been assigned to the train, prompting calls for authorities to either improve the service or stop associating it with the national poet’s name.
Speaking to the media at Lahore Railway Station, passengers said travelling by train had become increasingly difficult due to unhygienic conditions and faulty facilities.
They claimed that many coaches on major trains, including the Business Express, Shalimar Express, Tezgam and Allama Iqbal Express, were no longer fit for safe or comfortable travel.
Passengers complained that washrooms were filthy, foul-smelling and often lacked running water, while insects and poor sanitation made travel unpleasant. They also alleged that windows were either jammed shut or could not be closed once opened, with some travellers reportedly suffering injuries while trying to operate them.
According to passengers, air-conditioning units frequently stop working during journeys, while electric fans also malfunction.
They further claimed that faulty switches sometimes expose passengers to the risk of electric shocks.
Travellers also voiced concerns over the poor structural condition of several coaches, alleging that damaged roofs, floors and worn-out seats pose potential safety risks.
They said train breakdowns, engine failures and prolonged delays in remote areas have become increasingly common, leaving passengers stranded for hours, particularly during extreme summer heat.
