Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has defended the introduction of Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, rejecting claims that the iconic villain is arriving too late in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking during San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Feige argued that Doctor Doom’s debut is no more rushed than Thanos’ rise before Avengers: Infinity War.
Addressing criticism from Marvel fans, Feige noted that Thanos only made brief appearances before becoming the central antagonist of Infinity War. He pointed out that the Mad Titan largely appeared in post-credit scenes and short cameos, insisting that Infinity War served as the character’s true introduction for mainstream audiences.
Feige said Marvel plans to take a similar approach with Doctor Doom, explaining that Avengers: Doomsday will gradually reveal the villain’s motivations and backstory while introducing him to both comic book fans and general moviegoers.
However, many MCU fans remain unconvinced. Critics argue that while Thanos had limited screen time, his influence was felt throughout the Infinity Saga via the Infinity Stones, Loki’s invasion of Earth, Guardians of the Galaxy and other interconnected storylines that built anticipation over several films.
Doctor Doom, by contrast, has not appeared or been referenced throughout the Multiverse Saga, leading some fans to question whether the character’s arrival will feel earned. Others have also pointed to Marvel’s shift away from Kang the Conqueror following changes to the studio’s long-term plans, suggesting the franchise is now relying on Doctor Doom to become its new central villain.
Marvel showcased new Avengers: Doomsday footage at Comic-Con, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom taking centre stage. The film is scheduled to open in cinemas on December 18, 2026, and is expected to play a major role in shaping the future of the MCU.
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in The Fantastic Four #5 (1962) and has endured as the archenemy of the Fantastic Four.
Doctor Doom is the self-proclaimed moniker of Victor Werner von Doom, the monarch of the fictional Eastern European country of Latveria. Born to a Latverian healer and a Romani witch, Doom spent his life mastering both science and sorcery, and seeks to bring order to humanity through world domination and prove his intellectual superiority over Mister Fantastic—his old college rival and the leader of the Fantastic Four—whom he blames for his disfigurement in a laboratory accident. Major Doctor Doom stories include the “Unthinkable” arc in Fantastic Four (2003–2004), in which he imprisons Mister Fantastic in a magical dimension, and Books of Doom (2005–2006), a retelling of his origin written by Ed Brubaker.
