Indian woman to be deported after converting, marrying in Pakistan

An Indian Sikh woman who converted to Islam during a pilgrimage to Pakistan is expected to be returned to India on Monday through the Wagah Border.

The 48-year-old woman, who traveled to Pakistan under the name Sarbjit Kaur, arrived on November 4 as part of an Indian pilgrim group attending the birth anniversary celebrations of Baba Guru Nanak. On November 5, she converted to Islam, married a Pakistani national named Nasir Hussain, and took the name Noor Hussain.

Her absence became apparent on November 13 when the pilgrim group returned to India without her. Officials later confirmed her visa had expired on November 14, 2025, leading to the start of deportation proceedings in accordance with immigration regulations.

Sardar Mahinderpal Singh, former chairman of the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, had submitted a petition to the Lahore High Court requesting her deportation. However, sources indicate the deportation process began before any court ruling was issued.

Members of Pakistan’s Sikh community expressed concern that such incidents could prompt the Indian government to impose restrictions or implement stricter policies for Sikh pilgrims, especially women, traveling to Pakistan.

According to security sources, Sarbjit Kaur and Nasir Hussain were taken into custody two days ago in the Nankana Sahib area. Police and intelligence personnel conducted an operation in Pehray Wali village, apprehending both individuals.

Following the completion of legal procedures, the woman is scheduled to be handed over to the Indian authorities at the Wagah Border today, security officials confirmed.Latest News, Breaking News & Top News Stories | The Express TribuneAsif MehmoodRead More
